Ruth’s Chris’ Steak House
Though it’s vexing to see a chain set up shop in the shadow of the shuttered downtown Tristan, this popular high-end steak house has settled nicely into the market-front dining space attached to the French Quarter Inn. Their prime steaks are smartly seasoned and seared then delivered sizzling in butter on their signature 500-degree plates. Opt for the sautéed mushrooms and creamed spinach sides if you’re out for an evening of indulgence. While the décor seems somewhat bland and the iPad-housed wine and cocktail menu impersonal, the restaurant makes up for it with an attentive and cordial staff, promises to source local ingredients, and a curiously cool Lowcountry art installation on the ceiling of the Harley-Davidson shop-turned-bar. www.ruthschris.com

Chick’s Fry House
Downtown’s North Central neighborhood welcomes this fast-food-style, family-friendly fried chicken venue hatched from the folks behind Hominy Grill. The chicken, with a coating that complements rather than overwhelms, is tender and juicy without being greasy, and the delightfully crunchy, deliciously flaky fried fish should not be missed. The sides, which include slightly sweet but still tangy collards, a very cheesy mac and cheese, and a distinctive tomato pudding, will be familiar to Hominy Grill fans. Just be sure to save room for doughnuts—think Krispy Kreme but not as heavily fried. www.chicksfryhouse.com
