Style Q&A: The Bomb Co. founder Helen Hall-Leland’s shares her Frida Kahlo wardrobe inspiration & her New Year’s Resolutions
January 2024

Her style is “colorful and bold with lots of texture”

Since selling her first bag of Blender Bombs smoothie boosters in 2017, the former personal trainer has expanded her business, offering Blender Bombs at Whole Foods nationally and on Amazon and opening a Hustle Smoothie Bar in Mount Pleasant Towne Centre. Most recently, she’s launched a rebrand as The Bomb Co. and opened a new franchised smoothie bar concept called The Bomb Bar in West Ashley. Along the way, the founder has gotten married and had a baby girl. Look out for The Bomb Co. to introduce new products and open three Bomb Bar franchises this year. Here, Hall-Leland shares her Frida Kahlo-inspired wardrobe favorites and her New Year’s resolutions.

Q What’s your New Year’s resolution?
A
Personally, no phones on weekends. I would also like to get in the habit of waking up at 6 a.m. For work, my resolution is to get more people to drink a smoothie five days a week. Specifically, I’d like to have more than 6,000 smoothie subscribers by the end of 2024.

Q Do you have any wardrobe goals for 2024?
A
More color. More funk. I have become obsessed with seeing TikToks of women in their 80s who dress like they don’t give a damn, and they have incredible style. Think Iris Apfel. So, more colorful statement pieces: boots, head scarves, and jackets like this robe coat from Marrakshi Life (above).

Q What baby gear can’t you live without?
A
Lane’s stroller, hands down; the Doona (above, available at Under the Almond Trees). You can open it with one hand; it has saved us during our travels.

Q What’s your favorite cold-weather look?
A
Boots! They enhance any look. I’m loving these kitten-toe boots I bought from Reformation on King Street (above). I like to pair them with a denim slit skirt, also from Reformation.

Q You have a 13-month- old daughter. Has your style changed since becoming a mom?
A
I always joke how my style has gone from chic to mom chic. Less midriff, more coverage.

Q What are your   favorite local stores and designers?
A
Shopping local is very important to me. I cannot name just one: L’abeye for casual sweaters, Out of Hand for jewelry, Jahde for bright necklaces, Brackish for feather earrings, and Gwynn’s of Mount Pleasant for special occasions.

Q Do you have a signature accessory?
A
Head scarves and Brackish earrings. They are a must and elevate any outfit. Head scarves  scream confidence, and the earrings give texture.
