Mount Pleasant native Elizabeth Stuckey’s autumn wedding to Ryan Heuwinkel of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was a true family affair.
For starters, the bride sashayed down the aisle at Boone Hall Plantation’s Cotton Dock in an heirloom Murray Hamburger dress that has been worn by all the women in her family—her mother, two aunts, and two cousins. The dress first came into family’s hands when her aunt became engaged in the summer of 1960. While its train is a bit shorter, the long-sleeved cream-colored gown still maintains its original look “minus the hoop skirt part,” says Elizabeth.
At the altar, Elizabeth shared vows with Ryan alongside her bridesmaids and her brother while her cousin, Allen, officiated.
After the couple said, “I do,” guests celebrated at a reception that Elizabeth describes as “traditional with a vintage flare” while enjoying cuisine (she crab soup, shrimp and grits, and sweet potato soufflé, to name a few) prepared by the couple’s dear friend and owner of Barony House in Monks Corner, Bubba High. Ooh Events! immersed the Cotton Dock in antique pink roses, traces of eucalyptus, and even a few peacock feathers for pops of bright color. Chandeliers, vintage lanterns, and a few decorative birds were placed throughout the venue to maintain the alternative homegrown look the bride craved.
Now that all is said and done, Elizabeth says her walk down the aisle tops the list of favorite memories. “When the doors from the Cotton Dock opened,” Elizabeth explains, “all I could see was the love from all the people we loved so much that traveled so far to celebrate with us.”
