Art for Dance

Last Thursday, Lowndes Grove Plantation was transformed into a candle-lit sanctuary for the Art for Dance Dinner and Auction benefiting the Charleston Ballet Theatre’s new educational children’s series. The night started with a VIP cocktail reception in the main house, and yes, there were beautiful dancers everywhere.  They were easy to spot with their ballerina buns and amazing physique. As guests began to pour in and pick up bid cards, a few of the featured artists were on hand chattering about some of the artwork that was up for grabs at the auction.

Newton Malerman and his wife, Rina, were two of the artists that I had the pleasure of meeting. Well, Rina a printmaker, did most of the talking and eagerly pointed out her cast print, “Three Graces”. Newton, a sculptor, was extremely shy, but did spark up when I asked him about his work, an extensive wearable art glass collection. All of their pieces were very unique and very popular with partygoers. Another featured artist, Colleen Critcher, bid on Newton’s dichroic glass handbags.  That is the highest form of flattery when another artist wants and appreciates your work.

Around 7:30, guests moved into the adjoining tent for dinner provided by Fish Catering and a performance by the Charleston Ballet Theatre.
