Bedon’s Alley Party

The Bedon’s Alley party might just be the party of all Spoleto parties. Who would have thought such a masterpiece would be tucked away in a narrow alley off Tradd Street. The party was themed after La Cenerentola, which was more exciting than I had anticipated. The operatic interpretation of the Cinderella tale was funny and very easy to follow.  An eight-year old little boy sitting behind me with his dad gave me scene by scene commentary of the performance.

Upon entering the rose-covered gates, guests were greeted with smiles and sparkly wristbands. My mother tagged along with me to this grand event, and she was thoroughly impressed. Feeling like the belles of the ball, we made our way down the red carpet to the first wine stations that looked like a combination of the fairy godmother and a pumpkin carriage all rolled into one.  At least I think that is what they were trying to accomplish, but maybe my imagination was running wild after the inspiring performance. The young lady positioned in the center looked very uncomfortable, she had to remain very still because of the tentacles protruding from her hat were attached to the table, but it was a nice touch nevertheless.

As we walked farther down the alley, we were offered a variety of appetizers by waiters wearing powdered wigs.  Stay with me: there is still more to come. As I finished my glass a wine and headed to the bar for another glass, I was stopped in my tracks by the oversized glass slipper ice sculptures lined with limoncello martinis. It was magnificent. Carrie Bradshaw (Sex in the City) would have fainted at this beautiful sight. I grabbed a drink, which was perfect considering how humid it was. As I searched for a food table and continued to enjoy the scenery, I noticed an image of a huge clock about to strike midnight reflecting off of the side of one of the homes—very clever!

Ok, back to the food. Duvall Catering and Event Design provided the Italian-themed menu offering guests a panini station, cream tortellini, and tiramisu.  I am pretty sure the food was a big hit considering a saw more than a few people going back for seconds (I had two servings of the tiramisu).

While I was off taking pictures of beautiful people, I ran into Charleston Picture Company’s, Paul Cheney, who gave a few photography pointers (Thanks Paul).

I quickly rejoined my mother who was having a great conversation and history lesson about Charleston and the Battery with Tradd Street residents George and Harriet Williams, who were playing host to Amistad cast member Brian Williams. Brian was interested in my camera and we talked for a few minutes and I quickly turned him over to Paul and they begin a more in-depth conversation.  I think they are best buddies now.
