The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea Party
The very gracious Charles and Celeste Patrick hosted the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea party. Those of us who were unfamiliar with the downtown address had no problem finding our way to the party as a silent-movie paying homage to the Roaring 20s flickered across the front entrance wall of the house. The two hosts positioned themselves at the entrance and welcomed every single guest. I spoke with Patrick Properties event director Jennifer Goldman, who told me that they worked very closely with the Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea production team to develop the theme for the party from the food to the décor. The mood of the evening was very laid-back, but guests were energized and ready to party after witnessing the cabaret-style, highly animated performance. I heard a few guests say that this was the most innovative show they had ever seen. At one point during the show, a performer even pulled someone from the audience to join the cast onstage (I love a performance with crowd participation). The signature “Blue Devil” martini and an array of themed food stations were on hand for guests to enjoy and the food was absolutely delicious. My favorite dessert, by far, was at the crêpe station, which turned out gingerbread man-shaped crêpes, flambéed with Grand Marnier and drizzled with berries and whipped cream. It was the most popular food station and played into “The Biscuit Tin Revolution” performance, which featured gingerbread men who rise up against the pastry chef and run amok until the streets run red with raspberry jam. A few of the cast members showed up midway through the evening. You can always tell when the cast has arrived: They are always dressed in very funky clothes, and everyone immediately directs their attention to them. I introduced myself and congratulated them on a job well done. After I took a few snapshots and gave them the rundown on all of the great food selections, they told me how much they are enjoying the great Charleston weather and hospitality.
