East Cooper Meals on Wheels

“A Meal to Remember” was the theme at this year’s East Cooper Meals on Wheels annual gala and auction that was held at Alhambra Hall last Thursday. The elegant affair showcased food from East Cooper’s premier restaurants including Langdon’s Restaurant & Wine Bar, Mustard Seed Group, Old Village Post House, Sienna, Six Tables, and Southern Wine and Spirits. The dinner menu was overwhelming with so many delicious options to choose from. Braised beef short ribs, white bean puree, Lowcountry gazpacho, cooked smoked wild salmon, and warm polenta cake were a few favorites prepared by area chefs.

Silent auction items from more than 100 businesses aligned the walls inside and out. It looked more like a holiday gift drive with the way the tables were overflowing. The most sought-after item was the playhouse for children of all ages. This life-size playhouse or storage facility constructed by Capital City Homes was absolutely the most adorable thing that I have ever seen (check out the picture in the photo gallery).

“The guests rose to the occasion, helping to raise more than $65,000(a record high) to benefit recipients of the program. ECMOW packed and delivered more than 79,000 meals in 2007. Over the next 12 months, 220 volunteers will deliver more than 70,000 hot mid-day meals to Mt. Pleasant’s Old Village, the Hamlin Plantation neighborhood, along North Hwy. 17, and on the Cainhoy peninsula.
