The Great Gatsby Gala

Filed under: Fete Set — Ida at 7:30 am on Saturday, June 30, 2007

The Boys and Girls Club of the Trident Area recently held a costume friendly fundraiser called The Great Gatsby Gala on the lawn of Lowndes Grove— the perfect theme for that venue. Guests were decked out in a truly impressive array of attire. Linen suits and drop waist dresses were paired with thoughtfully selected accessories that included croquet mallets, feathered headpieces, and the requisite strands of pearls. Several women had even taken the time to style their hair into impressive finger wave bobs! It is rare for Charleston to get in the spirit a costume party, but these donors and party guests definitely embraced the joie de vivre of the jazz age.

As the sun journeyed below the horizon, guests gravitated to the tables along the marsh where they watched as the sky above the Ashley River was set ablaze with color. A cool evening breeze, sweet relief to the day’s oppressive humidity, caused table linens to dance and sent paper lanterns spinning.

As the party decor twirled in the breeze, a pair of accomplished performers displayed their swing skills in an exhibition dance that captured the attention of most party guests. Everyone was then invited onto the dance floor and that is where most guests remained for the duration of the gala— dancing the night away!
