The unveiling of the Philip Simmons Documentation Project, which encompasses a complete record of the blacksmith’s work and a documentary of the craftsman’s life, was unveiled at a well-attended event hosted by The Center for Photography last Wednesday. Attendees lined up to congratulate Mr. Simmons on a life rich in artistry and ground-breaking work, and several guests puchased a limited edition photograph of Mr. Simmons by Jack Alterman.

On Friday, Mayor Riley heralded the lighting of the inaugural Peace Tree at the Market Pavilion Hotel. Agents from the Salvation Army were on hand to announce their plan to serve more people in need this season than ever before, and guests enjoyed steaming mugs of hot chocolate before heading out into the blustery evening.

Spirits were high on Saturday morning for the 16th Annual Reindeer Run, a 5K race that raises funds for MUSC Children’s Hospital. Red noses, both from the cold and theme-related foam costumes, dotted the crowd, and the more intrepid runners donned full-body costumes including Elvis and Mrs. Claus (worn by a man). Neil McDonagh from Mt. Pleasant blazed a ferocious pace and set a new course record of 14:56. All runners crossed the finish line with great fanfare— a few people actually summersaulted across the line— and many headed to the third floor of Southend Brewery for free beer… at 9:30 a.m.!

The competitive trash talking at Saturday afternoon’s S.P.C.A. Chili Cook-Off threatened to eclipse the chili as the highlight of the afternoon. Charleston Fire Chief Rusty Thomas grabbed a live microphone and jumped onstage to boast about his firehouse chili, and he was soon joined by the other chili chefs who launched verbal volleys back and forth for half an hour. The good-natured banter elicited loads of laughter. Chief Thomas’ long-running losing streak was vindicated by a win this year for most traditional chili. Other winners included WCSC reporter Tracy Amick (best presentation), WCBD reporter Brad Franko and meteorologist Leigh Spann (most unique), and 95SX morning show personality Tanya Brown (best of show).
