Weekend Ahead
The forecast may be predicting chilly temperatures throughout the weekend, but a few parties are heating up the fundraising scene.
I chatted with Jesse Hendrix from the Gibbes Museum of Art about the upcoming Time Warp Party. If my interest wasn’t peaked before, it certainly is now.
“When was the last time you got to see artwork that was made by an artist who spent a week with a camera strapped to her head?” asks Jesse. ”How about the last time you attended a performance by a chanteuse descended from a wandering tribe of Roma Gypsies named Caramella Guillotine? If it’s been too long, make sure to attend Saturday night’s Time Warp Party at the Gibbes! The event celebrates the opening of Now!, the much-anticipated first Gibbes exhibition curated by new Executive Director Todd Smith.”
The party will feature strange food and drink (although she wouldn’t tell me exactly what that entails), a rollicking performance by Cabaret Kiki, and admission to see all of the Gibbes’ current exhibitions. The party also boasts a red and black glam-rock theme; costumes are optional, but a glam appearance is essential.

A slightly more subdued but equally engaging event is planned for Sunday night. Emily Abedon, cofounder of Operation Home, has this to say about the first-ever Gastropub It:
“Feast on award-winning chef Ben Berryhill’s fantastic Southwest-inspired cuisine, groove to the sounds of the Red Dog Ramblers, indulge in microbrews, and enjoy a wine tasting and signature margaritas on the patio all to benefit Operation Home’s emergency repairs program aiding disadvantaged and disabled residents of Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.”
Operation Home’s mission is to provide safety, handicapped access and dignity to those in need in the Low Country.
“Oftentimes the goal is nothing short of homelessness prevention, where we’re making the repairs necessary to keep a family living safely in their home,” says Todd Abedon, president of the Operation Home board. “I’m always blown away by how many people are willing to help.”
