In Support of the Symphony
The Charleston Symphony Orchestra’s season-opening Masterworks concert, a full-scale performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, earned a thunderous standing ovation on Saturday night, which was the perfect segue to the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League’s post performance gala.
Attendees were in high spirits—giddy almost—for the 9 p.m. auction and dinner that took place in the Gaillard Exhibition Hall. The theme, Gala by the Sea, played out in the form of blue table linens, shell centerpieces, and various images of seascapes projected onto the fabric draped walls. The nautical theme was also evident amidst some of the silent auction lots, such as a kayak and a giant mounted billfish. The David Archer Band played beach music staples, and it did not take long for guests to gravitate toward the dance floor.
Kathy Duffy, whose son’s nuptials were recently featured in Charleston Weddings magazine, was attired in a regal shade of deep blue while Marion Schools opted for a silver jacket adorned with blue beading.
I spotted Earl Hewlette sipping an electric blue cocktail with raspberries bobbing along the bottom. When I inquired about the flavor, he smiled and replied, “Blue. Good, but blue.”

Charleston magazine and Reverie on the Ashley are hosting a fun evening to benefit the Charleston Symphony Orchestra on the grounds of the Reverie development this Saturday.
I hear it is going to be a spectacular event with great food, three open bars, special gifts for guests, and a magical atmosphere. Picture a full symphony concert under the full moon’s glow, with chandeliers hanging from live oaks, luminaries lighting the boardwalk to the water, and the grounds transformed into a sumptuous outdoor salon.
Claire Gibbons, who is helping organize the Rhythm on the River event, graciously shared insight to the music selections for Saturday night. “They’ll be playing a range of pieces from Moon River to the theme from Pirates of the Caribbean,” said Claire. “The overall tone is lively and upbeat!”
