Dollars & Sense
Free gowns, markdowns, and a work-it-out weekend for DIY brides

Written by Melissa Bigner

Whew! Fresh back from a great weekend at the beach with longtime family friends whose daughter recently got engaged while rock climbing outside Vancouver. What can I say? Ryan’s a Canadian firefighter and Hannah—who I babysat when she was in diapers—are adventurers and, apparently, multi-taskers. So viva la adventurous proposals and here’s to another homegrown wedding a year from now! To help Hannah and other brides-to-be get their Big Day ducks in a row, here’s the buzz ’round these parts in the wedding world.

It’s (Almost) Here!
July 20, 2011

Pass it on! We’ve mentioned this one before, but the big event’s coming this Wednesday, so here’s our last shout-out: Bridal House of Charleston is participating in the “Brides Across America” campaign. Women who are active military—or engaged to someone currently serving in the military—are eligible to “win” a gown (valued between $500-5,000) if they simply show up at the store July 20. Gowns will likely be samples or overstock, will run the gamut of sizes, and are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis till the supply has been exhausted. For more information, contact the store. Bridal House of Charleston, 1055 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., Mount Pleasant; (843) 971-1477; bridalhousesc.com

“The Bride’s Wedding Planning Adventure”
August 5-7, 2011

You know the phrase “You have to spend money to make money?” Well, Dianne Shaver, co-author of The Bride’s Advisor Charleston and instructor for Trident Tech’s eight-week wedding planning course, has lined up a weekend seminar that puts a little twist on the adage for newly engaged couples, a sort of “You have to spend money to save money” redux. Sign up for “The Bride’s Wedding Planning Adventure” and you’ll know what she’s talking about. Attendees visit various venues, and get the lowdown from experts—local bakers, caterers, DJs, florists, officiants, photographers, stationers, and wedding planners—for saving money, preserving your sanity, and doing both stylishly. Top-of-the line pros (Cru Catering, Modern Trousseau, Tides Folly Beach, Woodlands Inn, and many more) give it the potential for a top-notch affair. Participants can register online, and until July 31, can e-mail Dianne about their dream wedding to win one of two half-price admissions. $295 per person. For more information, call (843) 532-0559 or visit bridesweddingplanningadventure.com.

Summer Sale!
August 5 & 6, 2011

Downtown’s newest frock shop is gearing up for a smokin’ sale during South Carolina’s tax-free weekend. Stop in to enjoy cupcakes and mimosas…and 15 percent off all gowns and accessories. Store manager Heather says the dresses—all from Modern Trousseau’s designer, Callie Tein—can be customized to suit a bride’s predilections, and that new gowns arrive weekly. The latest NKOTB? “Piper,” “Faye,” and “Dakota,” along with an array of gorg belts. Might be tough to wait till sale strikes! Modern Trousseau, 418 King St., (843) 722-6300; moderntrousseausc.com.

Sweet Style, Sweet Deals
August 5 & 6, 2011

Here’s another repeat announcement, but worth spreading the news till it’s over: Gown Boutique of Charleston on Daniel Island will be pulling out all the stops as the Espy gals reveal new arrival gowns and trunks show samples from Augusta Jones, Amy Kuschel, Martina Liana, Romona Keveza Legends, and Junko Yoshioka during the state’s tax-free weekend. We’re fired up over the lineup, and that they are offering 10 percent off any gown ordered that weekend.
