Break Out the Sewing Machines!

Charleston Fashion Week and Charleston Weddings hold an emerging bridal designer competition

Written by Melissa Bigner

You all might have heard about Charleston Fashion Week®, the weeklong extravaganza of runway shows under the tents at Marion Square? The biggest such event in the South? The one that’s launched newbie designers on toward “Project Runway,” led them to start their own lines, open their own shops, and even be featured in everything from Vogue to Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition?

Well, for the past five years, Saturday morning at Charleston Fashion Week® has meant big white gown time, when Charleston Weddings magazine puts on our annual Spring Bridal Show. And while we’ve always been fortunate to showcase amazing local and regional designers, we’ve yet to host a competition for up-and-comers. Till now.

Starting today, it’s game on for the next Carolina Herrera or the next budding Carol Hannah Whitfield. Here’s the scoop on the 2012 Emerging Bridal Designer Competition.

• The competition’s open to bridal designers living in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

• To qualify, your work cannot be (or have ever been) for sale in a bridal boutique.

• The winner—and there will only be one winner with one emerging designer show—will have his or her own runway show (featuring 10-12 looks, at least one of which should be a bridal gown; the remainder can be bridal party looks) at the Charleston Fashion Week® and Charleston Weddings Magazine’s Spring Bridal Show March 24, 2012.

For more details, FAQs, and entry forms, click here. The deadline for submissions is December 16, 2011, so don’t dally!

We’re so excited, we can hardly stand it. So please spread the word! (Forward this note to anyone you can think might be interested—the button is below.) We already know of some great candidates—the competition came about when bridal entrants were applying for regular emerging designer competition spots for CFW—and we can’t wait to spot the newest crop of gown maestros.

Our next issue—out in January 2012—will highlight a few entrants, but the big debut will be at the show itself. Tickets are already on sale, so save your spot now—it’s been standing-room-only for years now. Click here buy!
