Thanksgiving Checklist
Is your refrigerator stocked? Seating squared away? Ready your nest for holiday guests by following our nine Turkey Day tips
Prep the Bird: Turkeys under 20 pounds require three days to defrost properly so go ahead and move it from freezer to fridge. Turkeys over 20 pounds need four to five days.
Take Inventory: Avoid overspending at the store by taking stock of pantry items you already have. Don’t forget to double-check expiration dates.
Clear the Way: Negotiating fridge space can eat up precious prep time. Clean out fridge, freezers, and pantry in advance to make room for new groceries, dishes you plan to make ahead of time, and leftovers.
Develop a Seating Plan: Don’t wait for your guests to arrive to squeeze in extra seating. Call on neighbors who are feasting at friends’ or family’s houses and ask to borrow chairs and/or folding tables. Keep in mind they may be leaving a day or two beforehand, so contact them as soon as possible.
Stock the Bar: Plan on one bottle of wine for every two guests, and have a sparkling cider on hand for children or non-drinkers.
Go Simple With Your Centerpiece: Even the most striking table arrangements can turn into eyesores when they block views and conversation. Try using a collection of small vases instead of one big one, filling each with simple, seasonal blooms like mums that will dress up, not dominate, your spread.
Don’t Forget the Kids’ Table: Have some toys, games, and craft activities on-hand to entertain the kids once they’re finished eating. This will allow the adults time to linger at the table and enjoy the meal.
Plan a Post-Thanksgiving Day Menu: Create a leftovers menu before you do your Thanksgiving shopping. By picking up all the ingredients you’ll need for weekend soups, sandwiches, or casseroles, you ensure nothing goes to waste.
Store It Right: Need a break from turkey? Buy large freezer-safe bags to freeze what you don’t eat; divide into portions your family can enjoy one meal at a time. Label each clearly with the date and portion size.
The Charleston Home editors wish you and your family a very happy Thanksgiving! |
