Start Fresh, Be Brave
Is your interior ready for the New Year? Reinvent—or just reinvigorate—your look with Charleston Home’s tips for freshening your nest in 2010.
Out With the Old: Shine up your interiors without reaching for mop or broom. Simply decluttering your rooms will usher out 2009 (and 2008, and 2007, etc.) with fortitude, plus it’s a great mental exercise. Clean out junk drawers, utility closets, and kitchen cabinets. Donate out-of-use bedding, kitchen wares, furniture, and accessories to local branches of organizations like Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore or Goodwill, or contact the Junior League of Charleston to donate goods for their annual Whale of a Sale fundraiser.
Working Order: Now’s the time to repair items like clocks, lamps, and mirrors that are currently dead weight around the house. If an item is not valuable enough to have fixed, it’s time to toss it or sell in a garage sale. Aim to have everything in working order by February 1, along with doorknobs and knockers polished, floors waxed, and glass items dusted. There’s nothing like heading into the New Year with a house that shines as brightly as you do.
Sign Language: According to Chinese astrology, 2010 is the Year of the Tiger, full of its namesake’s fierce determination, unwavering courage, and wild instincts. What does this mean for your house? Get out of your comfort zone. Splash your walls with a bold color or douse a piece of furniture in high-gloss lacquer. Play up drama with an ultra-modern chandelier. Or you might just brave that jungle-like bonus room. Experiment with recipes, change out accessories, or just try out a different room arrangement. Note: The Year of the Tiger also emphasizes all things high-tech, so you might ring it in with an upgrade to your sound system or television.
