Wear Your Art

On June 3, from 3 to 6 p.m., shop to the sounds of live heavy metal as The Southern displays jewelry by Charleston metalsmiths including Emily Hill and Alex Klaes of Naked Eyes, Natalie Clapp of Silk Bone Jewels, Kaminer Haislip, Olivia Cramer, and Sarah Mosteller. “These artists take wearable work to the next level by creating recognizable, signature styles,” notes gallery co-owner Erin Nathanson. Get Comfy

Women’s lifestyle brand Soft Surroundings opened its 49th location in Towne Centre late last month. The St. Louis-based company prides itself on purveying clothing made from fabrics that are ultra, well, soft. In addition to casually elegant dresses, tops, and pants in myriad color options (see above), the retailer sells sleepwear, intimates, and a nice selection of swimsuits. Its focus on luxurious comfort extends to home goods, including bedding, furniture, and rugs, and a beauty department stocks a wide variety of skin care and makeup products. Party People

There was a balloon void on the peninsula, explain Mimi Striplin, of jewelry and clothing company The Tiny Tassel, and Liz Martin, of lifestyle blog and shop The Charleston Weekender. And filling it—with inflatable offerings ranging from gold foil numbers to confetti-centered creations—would fit right in with the festive aesthetic of the shop they wanted to open. Dubbed Cannonborough Collective, it debuted in May, selling balloons alongside art, accessories, candles, and even flowers from local businesses that rent spots in the shared space. A Handsome Arrival

”Time-honored barbershop traditions, elevated to modern standards, in an understated, masculine environment:” that’s what men can expect from The Cigar Factory’s new Barrelli Barber, says Peter Evans. He and co-owner Laran D’Eustachio launch the business on June 15 with an evening of food and drinks, live music, and a cigar lounge. The pair, who have worked together at Stella Nova for 20 years (Evans as owner and D’Eustachio as regional director), are offering a full range of services—cuts and colors, shaves, waxing, facials, and more—as well as their own line of grooming products.
