Chamber Music Charleston
September 2011

After a long, concert-less summer, local favorite Chamber Music Charleston (CMC) is kicking off its sixth season with a bang: the Mozart in the South festival from September 15-18. “We want to break down the stigma that classical music is elitist, predictable, or boring and instead make it fun and exciting!” says director Sandra Nikolajevs.

This four-day celebration of classical music does just that, beginning with Thursday’s performance by the 13 CMC musicians—plus a few guest performers—in the Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul. The next night, the Mozart Party invites guests to mingle with CMC performers at the Governor Thomas Bennett House, enjoying hors d’oeuvres, auction bidding, and live classical music while raising funds for the nonprofit’s outreach programs. Saturday’s all about the kids at the Little Mozart Circus, which gives them a chance to test out instruments in the “petting zoo” and watch demonstrations by their peers. Finish the weekend on Middleton Place’s grand lawn for a casual finale concert under the stars.

Chamber Music Charleston’s Mozart in the South takes place September 15-18 in venues around town. Prices vary. (843) 763-4941, www.mozartinthesouth.org
