Gordana Gehlhausen

Tuesday, March 16, 9:25 P.M.

Gordana Gehlhausen’s journey to the catwalk has taken her across countries and oceans, from her small Serbian village to Croatia, Germany, and the United States, finally landing her on season six of Project Runway. So it’s no wonder the designer’s travels inform her collection. “My Fall 2010 line is a play on texture, color, and experimentation with tribal influences inspired by a recent trip to China,” she says. But no matter how many miles she covers, the former downtown dweller is always thrilled to return to the Holy City, where she operated GOGA for eight years before moving shop to the West Coast. “I am so thankful for Charleston’s support,” reflects Gehlhausen. “And it’s exciting that the city gives local designers the opportunity to showcase their lines.”

Mychael Knight

Wednesday, March 17, 9:25 P.M.

From his first break in the industry as a stylist and designer for R&B group Jagged Edge’s clothing label to his “Fan Favorite” finish on season three of Project Runway, Mychael Knight has been charming fashion followers for close to a decade. Now, with the debut of his provocative Fall/Winter 2010 assemblage, this fearless creative is truly coming into his own. “This presentation is about achieving my voice as a designer,” he asserts. Titled “Carte Blanche,” the collection of separates and eveningwear finds strength in architectural detailing and an edgy, black-and-white palette. “Carte blanche means having unrestricted power to act at one’s discretion.” And with this luxurious show, Knight gives the in-charge woman the means to act as fashion authority.

Ashley Reid

Friday, March 19, 9:30 P.M.

Combining short hemlines, sexy mesh inserts, and sustainable fabrics, the color-blocked garments from Ashley Reid’s Spring 2010 line are anything but square. “I really liked the idea of building a collection around color,” says Reid, who debuted Clewis Reid during CFW’s Emerging Local Designer 2008 show. Inspired by a bold, monochromatic palette of salmon, poppy, and burgundy with mint accents, the SCAD graduate “wanted the colors to work together and represent a modern, clean feeling with just the slightest hint of an offbeat, clashy feel.” Now an instructor at the Art Institute of Charleston, Reid places comfort at the center of her understated, day-to-night sense of style, which highlights easy-to-wear essentials and accessories. “The shapes of my garments happen naturally, as I am most often drawn towards an easy day dress with a short hemline for spring.”

Carol Hannah Whitfield

Saturday, March 20, 1:40 p.m.

A finalist in CFW’s Emerging Designer Competition 2008, Carol Hannah Whitfield—an Anderson native and College of Charleston grad—also sewed her way to a finalist spot on season six of Project Runway. Having spent the last seven years making custom bridal and bridesmaid gowns, the self-taught designer is excited to debut her bridal collection at CFW. “A lot of my aesthetic is based on contrasting structure with fluid draping. I like to use fabric manipulation to create embellishment,” says Whitfield, whose pieces are carried at Maddison Row and Bella Bridesmaid.

Maria Dobrzanska Reeves

Saturday, March 20, 8:25 p.m.

Polish-born Maria Dobrzanska Reeves is the designer behind the marysia CHARLESTON brand.  Known as Marysia to family and friends, the designer's love of fashion began as a young girl.  Inspired by an impeccably dressed mother and a flair for the dramatic, Marysia spent many family holidays orchestrating fashion shows - casting herself and cousins as runway models. At the tender age of 10, she attended a professional ballet boarding school in Warsaw until her teen years when she joined her parents in coastal Delaware.  There, she became interested in other movement-oriented activities including swimming and life-guarding.  The water yielded good things for Marysia when she met her husband, Nathaniel while learning to surf.

The newlyweds moved to bigger West Coast waves as Marysia attended school at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles.  Following her training, an internship with Milly in New York ignited the design spark. The desire to raise a family ultimately brought the pair to Charleston, South Carolina and in the early months of 2007, the idea of marysia CHARLESTON took shape. The precision and discipline required to become a skillful ballerina were valuable as Marysia transitioned into the role of designer.   She approached her new line with the same rigor and passion as she did her ballet training years ago and the result is Marysia’s debut summer/resort 2008 collection.
