Reefer Madness
JULY 2-4, 9-12, & 16-18
Watch the drama that unfolds as a 1930s high schooler falls under the influence of one of society’s greatest menaces: marijuana. While this musical satire has audiences laughing today, it originated with a 1936 film called Tell Your Children, which was made to teach parents about the dangers of marijuana. Producer Dwain Esper bought the movie rights soon after it was released and cut his own version, Reefer Madness. Rediscovered in the 1970s, it became a cult favorite for its unintentional comedy, and in 1998, Kevin Murphy’s musical adaptation opened in Los Angeles. Village Playhouse, 730 Coleman Blvd., Mount Pleasant. Thursday-Saturday, 8pm; Sunday, 5pm. $25; $20 student/senior. (843)856-1579, www.thevillageplayhouse.com
