Prop Master
Introspection can be frightening, but turning those reflections inside out and then inviting an audience to comment requires another level of bravery entirely. Last month, the Gibbes Museum of Art courageously unlocked its vault for an inward look at what the holdings say about the 150-year-old institution and the society it serves. Husband-and-wife artists Juan Logan and Susan Harbage Page, known for their provocative explorations of race, class, gender, and sexuality, have developed a highly conceptual installation, aptly titled “Prop Master,” that juxtaposes pieces from the Gibbes’ assemblage with custom mixed-media creations. The resulting displays turn the traditional collection on its head and raise questions about historical and social hypocrisies.
