Pink Panther 2 not your cup of Steve Martin offbeat humor? Then pull up a barstool at Charleston Stage’s production of the comic writer’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Set in a Paris bar at the turn of the 20th century, this clever one-act imagines 23-year-old Picasso meeting 25-year-old Einstein at a time when each verged on shaping new perspectives on the universe. But the highbrowed battle of talent versus genius doesn’t keep Martin from the sex jokes, potty humor, or uproarious surprise guests. The New York Times praises his play for being “low-comedy funny while also suggesting that a great scientist and a great artist share a rarefied sense of beauty.” And in Memminger’s intimate space, the actors immediately break down the fourth wall and invite the audience right into this witty world. —Lauren Johnson
