Patrick Dougherty visits the Gibbes

Since 1982, sculptor Patrick Dougherty has been working with twigs and branches to create site-specific installations, combining his carpentry skills with his ardor for nature (which took root during a childhood spent exploring the woods of his native North Carolina). He’s exhibited around the globe—for example, he created this 2008 sculpture, Free At Last, at the Jardin des Arts in Chateaubourg, France—and this month visits Charleston to construct an exclusive work in the Gibbes Museum’s glass atrium, connecting the modern interior gallery space and the lush outdoor garden. Watch his progress, then catch his artist talk at the opening reception for the installation on Friday, March 24, at 6 p.m. Gibbes Museum of Art, 135 Meeting St. Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm; Wednesday, 10am-8pm; Sunday, 1-5pm. $12; $10 senior/military/student; $6 ages four-17; $35-$25 reception.
