Event Details

In 1908, eight artists staged an artistic rebellion that altered the art world. Arthur B. Davies, William Glackens, Robert Henri, Ernest Lawson, George Lukas, Maurice Prendergast, Everett Shinn, and John Sloan defied the National Academy of Design by organizing an independent exhibit. “The Eight,” as they were called, abolished the established hierarchy, making modern art accessible to the masses. This exhibit features 50 pieces by the artists, ranging from landscapes to portraits to urban life. The traveling show comes to Charleston from the Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art in Nashville. Gibbes Museum of Art, 135 Meeting St. Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. $9; $7 student/senior/military; $5 ages six-12; free for member/child under six. (843)722-2706, www.gibbesmuseum.org
