Make Your Own Sweetgrass Basket

Sweetgrass baskets have always been an integral part of Lowcountry culture; now learn the intricacies of this West African art form as you make one using Muhlenbergia capillaris, commonly referred to as sweetgrass. Lowcountry artisan Vera Manigault, who has been sewing baskets since she was five years old, leads this informative Charleston Horticultural Society workshop, using her skills as a Gullah storyteller to offer plenty of entertainment along the way. Bring a hand towel and a pair of scissors; all other materials are provided. Charleston Horticultural Society Educational Center, 46 Windermere Blvd. Saturday, noon-4pm. $65; $55 member.
