“From Slave to Sharecropper: African Americans in the Lowcountry after the Civil War”
Commemorating the bicentennial of the abolition of the international slave trade by the United States and Great Britain, this powerful exhibit is based on memories shared by Lowcountry descendants of slaves and sharecroppers. Images and artifacts, including period farm equipment, demonstrate the difficult circumstances endured by African Americans after the Civil War but also portray the strength of character that helped them overcome those extremely trying times.
