Make the most of life on the coast! Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) offers activities for most every age and skill level—we rounded up our picks for families and beginners.
JULY 9 Surf Seining
Enjoy an evening on the beach as little ones ages six and up seine for creatures of the surf, including shrimp, pompano, and anchovy. Folly Beach County Park, 1100 W. Ashley Ave., Folly Beach. Thursday, 5-6:30pm. $9; $7 Charleston County resident.
JULY 10 Folly Beach Bird Walk
Explore the dense maritime forest and dunes of the north end of Folly as a guide leads you in a search for seabirds and shorebirds. Ages 12 and up are welcome. Folly Beach Coast Guard Station, end of E. Ashley Avenue, Folly Beach. Friday, 7:30-9:30am. Free.
JULY 18 Folly to Kiawah Kayak Tour
Travel from Folly Beach across the Stono to the seldom-visited Sandy Point on Kiawah, where you can hike, spot dolphins, and track shorebirds. CCPRC Headquarters, 861 Riverland Dr., James Island. Saturday, 9am-5pm. $54; $45 Charleston County resident.
JULY 19 Charleston Harbor Kayak Tour
Enjoy a new perspective on familiar sites as you paddle under the Ravenel Bridge, pass the USS Yorktown, and finish up at Shem Creek Boat Landing. Remley’s Point, 363 6th Ave., Mount Pleasant. Sunday, 9am-noon & 1-4pm. $36; $30 Charleston County resident.
AUGUST 1 Edisto River Canoeing
Load the whole family into a canoe for this trip down the Edisto planned specifically for parents and children ages eight and up. CCPRC Headquarters, 861 Riverland Dr., James Island. Saturday, 9am-5pm. $34; $28 Charleston County resident.
