Skymiles, Take Me Away!
Thinking about foregoing a vacation this year to save a few bucks? Well, for the sake of your family, friends, and coworkers, think again.
I made that mistake last year and paid for it—in stress, fatigue, and burnout (as did anyone who had to exist near my grumpy self). It’s true: we all need a break from the day-to-day to recharge our bodies, refresh our perspectives, and just plain have fun. And ironically, given current financial worries, this is the year to do it, as a plethora of destinations, resorts, and attractions are offering discounts and deals galore. All it takes to plan your well-deserved albeit budget-conscious trip is some time, creativity, and good Google skills.
In our June Getaways issue (on newsstands now), we’ve done some of the legwork for you. For “Destination: Summer Escapes”, travel editor Sandy Lang personally researched 12 of our 15 great value-packed getaway ideas (the other editors and I took care of the rest—we deserve to get out from behind the desk now and again, right?). From Folly Beach to Florida to the cool climes of Maine, we found a variety of retreats to fit every travel style and budget.
In “Asheville: From Field to Fork”, food editor Marion Sullivan met up with her daughter and granddaughters to explore this hub of the Southeastern sustainable food movement and quite literally follow their food from farm to table.
As for my plans this summer, you can bet I’ll be taking some time off. I have cashed in my Skymiles to meet my family in the Rockies for a long-overdue reunion and will be “house-sitting” in Santa Barbara (read hiking, playing on the beach, wine-tasting, and visiting old friends) for my birthday. How’s that for getting creative?
Share Your Favorite Getaway
E-mail me (dshankland@charlestonmag.com) low-res photos from your best vacation, whether it’s a family road trip, outdoor adventure, or big-city getaway and tell me all about it—where you stayed, where you dined, what you did, and why it was your best vacation ever. Your images and captions will then be posted to our Readers’ Best Vacations Ever web page. Check out the photo gallery for my Best Vacation Ever: surf camp in Costa Rica in 2007. Told you I need to get away!
