The sixth annual Make-A-Wish Foundation Waves & Wishes 5K Race was an absolute blast. The weather was beautiful and the mood was upbeat and festive as competitors hit the ground running. The Wando cheer team urged runners across the finish line, and James Brooks took first place overall with a time of 17:07. While some people raced against the clock, others seemed content just to participate and benefit a good cause.

Among the competitors was Make-A-Wish recipient Dylan Gardner and his family. Dylan finished the race and helped to hand out the awards to his fellow runners. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Dylan fulfilled his dream of swimming with the dolphins earlier this year.

Also present were Jean Carrasquillo and her two feathered companions, Boomer and Jax. The two birds happily rode alongside their owner as she pushed them across the finish line. “We run with a cockatoo too, but she would NOT get out of bed this morning,” Carrasquillo laughed.

Everyone gradually made their way from the course up to the Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier to tuck into a delicious brunch of frittata and spicy shrimp and grits, which was provided by Locklear’s Beach City Grill, before Dylan joined Race Coordinator Jessica Woolsey to present the awards.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children suffering from life-threatening medical conditions. Their mission is to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Waves & Wishes is an annual fundraiser presented by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of South Carolina.
