Last Saturday night was definitely a family affair at the annual"Shuckin' for Shelter" Oyster Roast on Goldbug Island hosted by Carolina Youth Development Center.
I saw tons of little ones running around, eating barbeque provided by Sticky Fingers and dancing to the classic rock tunes provided by local rock cover band Stoneking. Guests mingled between several locations- the main hall for barbeque and auction bidding, the bar area for beer or wine , and the dock area where you could shuck and eat oysters to your heart’s content.
The most memorable moment of the night was when I was introduced to a little girl named Lizzy, who is a part of the Big Brother Big Sister program. She pulled me around the event like a little rag doll introducing me to everyone under the sun including her Big Sister Madeleine McGee. Madeleine is a former Coastal Community Foundation president and has devoted her career to addressing local community issues for the past 20 years. She and Lizzy have a wonderful relationship and enjoy hanging out on the weekends. I told Madeleine how I used to be a “Big” when I lived in Boston and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. She immediately started recruiting me to join the Charleston County chapter. This is an amazing organization and all of the funds raised from tonight will support six residential, two outreach, and several support programs that complement all services to make a real difference in the lives of more than 600 local children each year.
