Fresh oysters, beer, and live music rarely fail to bring out a good crowd, and when the shucking and sipping helps support a good cause, Charleston natives are sure to turn out in droves. Such was the case for Sunday’s carefree, down-home oyster roast at picturesque Bowen’s Island Restaurant.

The oyster roast, hosted by the Charitable Society of Charleston, benefited the South Carolina Lowcountry Environmental Education Programs (LEEP) and felt like a celebration of all our favorite things about the Lowcountry.

Oyster chefs continually shoveled the steaming shellfish along the tables, where they were quickly snatched up by large groups of hungry partygoers. Firefly cocktails and cold beer were flowing, and Calvin Taylor kept the party going with his sweet, Southern sounds. Guests meandered about the property and its quaint, charming buildings, taking in the sweeping views of the marsh and the incredible mounds of old oyster shells.

The large crowd divided itself between the docks, oyster tables, and line for hot chili and hot dogs as the afternoon wore on. Everyone was happy to catch up with friends or just take in the beauty of the marsh in autumn, and even the gnats stayed at bay, making for an enjoyable Sunday afternoon.

The Charitable Society of Charleston was founded in 1993 by Ben Thrash, and the organization strives to provide for the needs of local not-for-profit organizations, with a focus on a serving children, the elderly, individuals with special needs, and community wellness.

The South Carolina Lowcountry Environmental Education Programs works to provide opportunities for students of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds to explore South Carolina's natural environment through experiential learning.
