Event Details

It’s hard not to make a funny face when you see these face jugs.  This unusual pottery collection discovered in Aiken, South Carolina, leads scholars to contemplate their original use. The mysterious clay jugs range in size and feature strange facial expressions believed to express hidden cultural meanings for the African-American community that produced them. During this symposium, make your own clay face jug, attend a kiln firing, and discuss the artifacts following expert and curator presentations at a Q & A session. Columbia Museum of Art, 1515 Main St., Columbia. Friday-Sunday, times vary. $75; $65 member; $35 student. (803)799-2810, www.columbiamuseumofart.org
