Magnolia Plantation’s slave cabins were occupied well into the 20th century, first by slaves and then freedmen. Now, to gain an understanding of the complicated world of those who lived in them, the historic site has carefully restored the buildings through the site’s Cabin Project to record the full African-American experience on the property. Listen to a discussion of the lives of slaves at the plantation while touring the cabins, each of which reflects a particular era—from Antebellum to Reconstruction and on through the 1920s and the Civil Rights Movement.
