Next to New Orleans, Charleston was one of the South’s largest hubs for emerging jazz talent at the beginning of the 20th century, as young men and women trained at a local orphanage and private school then moved on to play with greats like Duke Ellington and John Coltrain. Sound interesting? At this event, founder of the Charleston Jazz Initiative and College of Charleston professor Karen Chandler speaks about the city’s often overlooked musical past before a reception featuring live jazz music.
